Spring Update

So what's happening in our backyard farm....

I always know it's going to rain in spring and usually it's extra windy too so I don't plan a lot with our vegetable gardens until later in September. I remember one spring years ago where I had been really organised and had planted out seeds and seedlings and then we got really rough weather and it was all ruined.

I had to completely start over.

I am fortunate that I now have a greenhouse that my husband built and so that is where I found myself 6 weeks ago planting out seedlings of a variety of vegetables.

Boy have they taken off!!  They are getting warmth on the good days and regular watering and so they have grown so much better and quicker than expected. And no critters to eat them!!

What have I planted this early?

Two kinds of Silverbeet, Spinach, Golden beetroot, Pak Choy, Lettuce and Beans. The beetroot seedlings weren't looking so flash when I planted them but now they are healthy and growing really well.

Below is a photo taken before I did the weeding and you can see the vegetables growing. SO many weeds!!

With the rains I have had to tend to the chicken coop a little bit more lately to keep it dry for the girls to stop flooding. So in the coming holidays my Dad is coming to stay and he is hopefully going to help me build a raised garden in front of the chicken coop to stop the water run-off coming down the lawn where it slopes down and flowing into the front of the coop. It will look a lot nicer as well and add some prettiness to that part of the garden.

Otherwise our girls are doing great and still giving us 4 eggs a day which we are enjoying. I have the best poached eggs ever! I have been learning about washing the eggs and how long they last verses keeping the eggs unwashed until you are using them.

This is a treat we give the hens a few afternoons a week. They love them!

Update: Since starting this post I have weeded my greenhouse and the vegetables are growing so fast it is wonderful. We have harvested our first Pak Choy and also eaten more carrots that were planted late autumn. My Dad did come and stay and he helped weed some of the vegetable gardens for me and planted out our potatoes. We didn't get the garden done by the chicken coop but we did go for a visit to the local nursery to look at different plants and Dad gave me lots of advice. He loved looking at the variety and it was fun to watch him get excited when he saw a favourite plant.

Thanks for reading and have a great week!

Blessings, Fiona
