Victory Garden Update

Why do I call my garden a Victory Garden?



Well, I am quite the fan of the wartime years, the home front and how families thrived and survived. To be honest I do have a slightly romantic view of that era but I still love it. I have written about this in an earlier post.

There is a fantastic TV series produced by BBC ( gotta love the BBC! ),  called The 1940's House. It is a real life documentary style programme with a modern British family who live for 9 weeks back in the 1940's while WW2 is happening. It is fantastic, I love it! There is also another brilliant series called The Wartime Farm which is about 3 historians and archeologists who live on an English farm for one year and live just like it was during WW2. It is really fascinating watching how they lived, farmed and survived and all the rules and regulations.

Last year as part of our homeschooling studies we learnt about WW2 and the home front, the London Blitz and the Holocaust. I watched the two above series with my boys and they really enjoyed it, especially The 1940's House. It was quite an eye opener for them about the hardships people went through and I think it has made them more grateful for food.

So, I call my garden a Victory Garden as a bit of a laugh but also out of memory of the hardworking families that had to grow their own vegetables out of survival.



There is something quite satisfying about picking your own vegetables and bringing them into the kitchen. Whether you have a whole basket of something or just one or two, it's like being a new mum. So much pride that you grew them!

My garden doesn't always look full all at the same time as everything grows at different rates and some vegetables get picked earlier and then when I have the space I re-grow another lot of say silverbeet or lettuce so sometimes I have gaps. But our garden has given us a huge amount of produce this summer so far but I have still had to buy vegetables as well so we have variety in our meals.





What have we had?

Potatoes, two types of lettuce, silverbeet, spinach, golden beetroot, pak choi, cucumbers,

strawberries, parsley and mint, cherry tomatoes are starting, lemons, parsley, coriander and three types of mint

What am I still trying to grow?

More spinach and silverbeet, lettuces, courgettes which are quite slow this year, calvero nero

rhubarb, pumpkins for autumn, beans, purple beetroot which is ready to harvest and capsicum.





Our garden isn't Pinterest perfect looking but it does produce a lot of vegetables and that's the most important thing. Right now as I am writing this post it is cooling down later in the evening and I can hear nearby cows mooing which sounds so lovely. I feel very blessed to have the backyard space that we have to grow our own produce and to have space for our hens, definitely a provision from God.

Our hens are giving us lovely eggs every morning and today we had plenty to use so I made a classic kiwi egg and bacon pie for dinner with vegetables. Sadly the veggies weren't from our garden.





With some vegetables that I steam I save the cooking liquid to use as stock in other meals. I mentioned that in last week's Frugal Friday post.
